ALEVI ENCYCLOPEDIA
PRACTICAL GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS

Who Can Contribute to the Alevi Encyclopedia?

The Alevi Encyclopedia welcomes contributions from anyone interested in Alevi studies, including academics, researchers, writers, and intellectuals. Submissions must adhere to the encyclopedia’s editorial principles and guidelines.

What Are the Official Languages of the Encyclopedia?

The Alevi Encyclopedia is initially published in both Turkish and English. Over time, additional languages such as Kırmancki (Zazaki), Kurmanci, German, and French will be incorporated.

What Is the Recommended Length for Entries?

  • Entries should ideally be between 50-100 and 2,000 words.
  • For entries exceeding 2,000 words, authors must prepare a 150–200-word summary and consult with the Editorial Board before submission.

How Should Footnotes and References Be Formatted?

  • Authors should refer to the Citation and Reference Guide for instructions on footnotes and bibliography formatting.
  • Whenever possible, DOI numbers should be included to make sources more accessible to readers.

Can Authors Link to Other Entries Within Their Text?

Yes, authors can link to related entries they have written. To do so, they must highlight the relevant term in bold to indicate an internal encyclopedia link.

Can Entries Cover Groups of Concepts Instead of a Single Term?

Yes. While traditional entries may focus on singular concepts such as semah, ocak, talip, gülbenk, or cemevi, broader thematic entries are also encouraged. Examples include:

  • Social and historical themes: Alevi discrimination, Oral culture in Alevism, Alevi massacres
  • Sociological and political topics: Intergenerational trauma among Alevis, Gender inequality in Alevism, Alevi humor and satire, Alevi diaspora
  • Religious and cultural studies: Kureyş Ocak, Alevi music, Alevi memory and identity

Entries may also explore specific historical periods, events, processes, or socio-cultural phenomena relevant to Alevi history, geography, sociology, anthropology, theology, folklore, and politics.

Can Authors Edit Their Published Entries?

Yes. Authors may revise their published entries in coordination with the Editorial Board. Any changes made will be documented within the entry.

How Will Entries and Author Information Appear on the Encyclopedia Website?

Entries will be listed alphabetically and thematically. Clicking on an entry will display its content along with the author’s name. Readers can also click on the author’s name to access:

  • A short biography
  • Other entries written by the author
  • Social media links (if shared by the author)

Can Multiple Entries Be Written on the Same Topic?

Yes. The Alevi Encyclopedia encourages diverse perspectives, especially on complex or debated topics. Authors can contribute new entries that offer alternative viewpoints or expand on topics already covered by others.

How and When Are Entries Published?

Entries are published in batches following periodic calls for submissions. Once the submission deadline closes, the Editorial Board aims to publish entries within two months. The project may adjust this process in future editions.

How Can Authors Contact the Editorial Board?

  • For inquiries, authors can contact the Editorial Board via [email protected].
  • For individual editorial members, email addresses are available here.
